The AHPBA Podcast

Today’s episode features our interview with Dr. Shimul Shah.  Dr. Shah is a professor of surgery and the division chief of transplantation at the University of Cincinnati, Vice Chair for health services research, and the James and Catherine Orr Endowed Chair of Liver Transplantation.

In this episode, we discuss training paradigms for hepatobiliary surgery and the role of liver transplantation in the care of patients with colorectal liver metastases.  We hope you enjoy the episode!

El Dr. Visser recibió su título de médico y cirujano general en la Universidad de California en San Francisco. Luego completó una beca de formación en cirugía hepatobiliar y pancreática en la Universidad de Edimburgo en Edimburgo, Reino Unido.

Actualmente el Dr. Visser participa activamente en el programa de Cirugía General y es el director del programa de Cirugía Hepatopancreatobiliar (HPB) y Director Médico del Programa de Atención del Cáncer GI en el Centro de Cáncer de Stanford.

El Dr. Oscar Chapa es jefe Del Servicio De Cirugía en El Hospital General De México y Profesor Titular de Cirugía General de la Universidad Autónoma de México. El Dr Federico Aucejo, @FAucejo es el Director del Programa de Cáncer de Hígado y Director Quirúrgico de la Clínica de Tumores de Hígado en el Departamento de Cirugía General en el campus principal de Cleveland Clinic. Nativo de Argentina, el Dr. Aucejo recibió su título de médico de la Universidad Favaloro en Buenos Aires, Argentina, y se graduó con honores. Realizó una residencia y pasantía en su tierra natal. In this episode, we interviewed Dr. Julie Hallet.  Dr. Hallet is a surgical oncologist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, assistant professor at the University of Toronto, and associate scientist at the Sunnybrook Research Institute.

Juan M. Sarmiento, MD, FACS, es Profesor de Cirugía en la División de Cirugía General y Gastrointestinal, Departamento de Cirugía en la Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad de Emory y Director del Centro de Cirugía Biliar Hepatopancreática (HPB) en el mismo Hospital.

El Dr. Sarmiento es nació en Colombia. Llegó a los EE. UU. en 1995 y realizo nuevamente residencia cirugía general en Rochester, MN, en la Clínica Mayo. Estuvo en la facultad del Departamento de Cirugía de Mayo después de terminar su formación hasta su traslado a Emory en Atlanta. Conversamos sobre su camino de formación, anécdotas y consejos para realizar la pancreatoduodenectomia.

Yerén es jefe de Servicio de Cirugía de Hígado y Vías Biliares Hospital Nacional Guillermo Almenara Irigoyen, Lima, Perú y presidente del capítulo peruano del IHPBA. In this episode, we interviewed Dr. Alice Wei.  Dr. Wei is an HPB surgeon at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.  She is the Co-Director of Surgical Initiatives at the David M. Rubenstein Center for Pancreatic Cancer Research and an associate professor of surgery at the Weill Cornell School of Medicine.

We discuss Dr. Wei's initial academic career as an HPB surgeon in Toronto, followed by a mid-career transition to her current position in NYC at MSKCC.  During the podcast we talk about the importance of having distinct initial, mid, and later career goals.  We additionally examine differences in centralization of care for pancreatic surgery between the Canadian and the United States healthcare systems, and finally hear about developing trials investigating definitive radiotherapy for pancreas cancer.

Se graduó con su título de Médico en la Universidad Compluense de Madrid, España y luego hizo su residencia en el Hospital Vall d'Hebron en Barcelona, España. Realizo Fellowship en Trasplante Abdominal y Oncología Quirúrgica HPB en la Universidad de Toronto, Toronto General Hospital. Gonzalo tiene muchas publicaciones y grants; ha ganado varios premios; y presentado en reuniones internacionales lo que se ha convertido en su pasión y principal linea de investigación la Oncología en Trasplante.
